Jeff: Got this from a friend “I Have a DREAM!” do you have a DREAM?
Martin Luther King stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and said four words that rocked the world. “I have a dream”. These words are among the most powerful ever spoken. They touched people in their lives and moved them to action. They changed laws and shook government. They knocked down doors of segregation and severed chains of prejudice. “I have a dream.”
What about you? What is one dream that you have? One dream you’ve been putting off or procrastinating. John F. Kennedy said, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. “Specific? Yes. Short? Yes, Visual? Yes, Effective? It moved a nation to action! It put Neil Armstrong on the Moon!
The next step to living your dream is to figure out why you want it. A lot of people have goals, but they have never taken the time to figure out why they want them. Then they sit around wondering “why” they don’t have the motivation to make it happen. Victor Frankl said if you have a big enough why, you can deal with anyhow.” If you knew that your life depended on your increasing sales by 5% next month, would you find a way to make it happen? What if the lives of your entire family depended upon it? What if I promised you sales bonus of $1 million for a 5% increase in performance? At some point, your brain kicks in and says, “Yeah baby!” and you start to take action. Get it? It’s all in the reasons, the motivations for doing it. Get enough reasons and the behavior will take care of itself.
Now the great thing is, you are free to choose the reasons you will pursue your dream. You can choose as many as you want. You can make them as emotionally compelling as you want. You can think about the pleasure of achievement, and you can consider the pain of remaining stuck where you are.
Do whatever it takes, until your brain kicks in and says, “Yea baby,” until you know that you are absolutely committed to making it happen. Go.
